Beneficial ownership evidence that holds up for SME onboarding
Practical evidence standards for complex ownership chains common among Hong Kong SME fintech customers.
SME onboarding in Hong Kong often involves layered holding companies, nominee directors, and overseas shareholders. A registry extract alone rarely explains who ultimately owns or controls the customer.
Strong files map the ownership tree, name each beneficial owner above the threshold, and record how identity was verified for each person. Where ownership is opaque, EDD notes should explain what was requested, what arrived, and why residual risk was accepted or declined.
During audits we sample SME files against that narrative—not against a checkbox list that ignores structure.
